Ireland: Plans to reach 8GW of photovoltaic installed capacity by 2030

Dec 01, 2023

The Irish government recently stated that the country plans to install 8GW of photovoltaic systems by 2030. After 2025, the installed capacity of photovoltaic systems installed by the Irish government will reach the current level of onshore wind power (about 4.5GW). In the 2023 Climate Action Plan, the Irish government has set a target of 8GW of installed photovoltaic system capacity by 2030.

The Irish government sets out these targets in the report ‘Energy Security in Ireland to 2030’, the country’s strategy for achieving energy security. This will be achieved through existing measures such as the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme and micro-generation, as well as a Small-Scale Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (SRESS) due to be launched next year, with support from the Irish Department of Environment, Climate and Communications. Target to install 8GW photovoltaic systems.

In a separate report published by the Irish government, the Small-Scale Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (SRESS) will be launched next year and is designed to support larger consumers of renewable energy such as farms, public buildings, commercial and industrial entity. The scheme will also provide access to the market for renewable energy communities and other small PV projects with an installed capacity of up to 6MW.

The Irish government stated in the document: "The Small-Scale Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (SRESS) will play an important role in ensuring the security of Ireland's future electricity supply, allowing users to generate electricity for their own use through the installation of renewable energy generation facilities, thereby reducing their burden on the electricity supply. The demands of the grid provide a way for small renewable power generation facilities to enter the market."

The Small-Scale Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (SRESS) will provide funding in two tranches. The first tranche of funding will be used to develop renewable energy generation facilities ranging from 50kW to 1MW for self-consumption. The second part of the funding is aimed at community, local and small and medium-sized enterprise renewable energy projects from 1MW to 6MW, using a floating feed-in tariff subsidy scheme and no auction.
