Rooftop PV accounts for 70% of new installed capacity in Europe

Jan 05, 2024

Europe's installed solar capacity exceeds expectations, and the installed capacity in October 2023 alone is equivalent to the total installed capacity in 2022. According to Rystad Energy's model forecast, new solar power generation capacity will increase by 30% in 2023 compared with 2022. By the end of 2023, new solar panels will exceed 58 gigawatts of direct current (GWDC).

In 2023, rooftop photovoltaic module installations have taken a dominant position, accounting for 70% of the total new photovoltaic module installations in Europe. This underlines the continent’s determination to democratize clean energy and its ability to adapt to solar photovoltaic technology. The technology is faster to deploy and has fewer regulatory hurdles than large-scale ground-mounted PV installations.

In 2023, Germany's total solar photovoltaic power generation capacity reached 13.5GWDC, a record high. Other major emerging markets include Poland and the Netherlands, whose growth is driven by a surge in rooftop PV installations. This trend is currently making waves across the continent.

Rooftop PV is driving a shift in Europe’s renewable energy landscape, transforming it from a niche market into a powerful force reshaping the continent’s energy mix.
